Building a Morning Routine You'll Keep

Search "morning routine" and you'll find a lot of five-step rituals involving a cold plunge, twenty minutes of journaling, and a green juice, all before 6am. For most people, that routine survives about four days.

A routine that lasts is usually shorter and more boring than that. Here's what tends to hold up.

Pick one thing that matters, not five

A morning routine with one non-negotiable, water, a short walk, your vitamins, whatever it is, is easier to protect than one with five. On a rushed morning, five things become zero. One thing usually survives.

Prep the night before

The single biggest lever isn't willpower, it's friction. Laying out your supplements, filling a water bottle, or setting out clothes the night before removes the small decisions that eat up morning energy before you've even started.

Let it flex with your actual schedule

A routine built for a 6am wake-up falls apart the first time you're up at 7:40. Build yours around "the first 20 minutes after I wake up," not a specific clock time, so it survives a late night or an early meeting.

Skip the routine that requires a mood

If a habit only happens when you're feeling motivated, it's not really a routine yet. It's a good day. The habits worth keeping are the ones you can do half-asleep and slightly annoyed.

Start with less than you think you need. You can always add to a routine that's actually working; it's much harder to fix one you've already abandoned.
